What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

Aortic regurgitation usually progresses slowly over years. Many people do well despite moderate to severe regurgitation of the aortic valve. Symptoms may not appear until the left heart chamber is quite stressed. Common symptoms include:

  • abdominal discomfort
  • chest pain
  • excessive sweating
  • palpitations, or an unusual awareness of the heart beating in the chest
  • shortness of breath that worsens with exertion or lying down
