What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

Someone with teeth grinding may make noticeable grinding sounds during sleep. The individual's teeth may be sore, especially in the morning. Following are some of the other symptoms:

  • facial pain
  • headache
  • jaw dislocation or clicking
  • stiff or sore jaw joints or muscles when chewing, especially in the morning
  • teeth that are sensitive to brushing, and to hot or cold foods
  • tense facial and jaw muscles
  • wear on the teeth, with hairline cracking of the enamel coating
