Symptoms & Signs

What are the signs and symptoms of the infection?

Many people infected with hookworms do not have symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can include:

  • a red itchy rash
  • a cough and other symptoms similar to pneumonia
  • stomach cramps
  • diarrhea
  • Some people may also suffer from anemia or a low red blood cell count. A person with anemia may have fatigue, dizziness, difficulty breathing during activity, and headaches. Anemia can be particularly severe in children who have been infected for a long time.
