Hysteroscopy, Diagnostic for Infertility

Home Care and Complications

What happens later at home?

After the procedure, the woman may have the following symptoms:

  • menstrual-like cramping
  • problems urinating
  • watery vaginal discharge lasting from 1 to 4 weeks
  • What are the potential complications after the procedure?

Hysteroscopy is considered a "minor" procedure. However, complications may occur. These include:

  • problems related to the pain medicine. These may involve reaction to the medication or trouble breathing.
  • pain during the procedure. This can be caused by the use of too little pain medicine.
  • puncture of the uterus.
  • infection of the cervix, uterus or fallopian tubes.
  • vaginal bleeding. This can be due to leakage from blood vessels in the uterus or tears in the cervix caused by the surgery tools.
  • injury to the bowel or bladder if the uterus is punctured.
  • Most women, however, have no complications from this procedure.
