Results and Values

What do the test results mean?

Normal serum iron levels are:

  • Men: 65 to 176 g/dL (micrograms/deciliter)
  • Women: 50 to 170 g/dL
  • Newborns: 100 to 250 g/dL

  • iron poisoning, caused by ingestion of too much iron

  • lead poisoning, caused by accidental ingestion of lead
  • liver problems, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis
  • Low serum iron levels may be a sign of:

  • chronic blood loss, such as gastrointestinal bleeding
  • a diet low in iron
  • iron deficiency anemia
  • poor absorption of iron from the digestive tract
  • third-trimester pregnancy
