Symptoms & Signs

What are the signs and symptoms of the infection?

Symptoms are usually severe and come on suddenly. Symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis can include:

  • fever and chills
  • low back pain
  • malaise, or a vague feeling of illness
  • muscle and joint pain
  • need to urinate frequently
  • need to wake up during the night to urinate, which is called nocturia
  • pain in the area between the base of the penis and the rectum
  • painful urination
  • urgent need to urinate
  • weak flow of urine
