Symptoms & Signs

What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

The symptoms of urinary tact infections can vary with a child's age. Babies and very young children can't tell anyone where the discomfort is. They may have:

  • a high fever, usually more than 101 degrees F
  • sometimes, a low-grade fever, under 100 degrees F
  • irritability
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea and vomiting
  • signs of just not feeling well
  • urine in the diaper that smells
  • Older children's symptoms may include:

  • pain in the abdomen or pelvis
  • pain under the side of the rib cage, or flank pain
  • pain in the lower back
  • crying or complaining of pain or burning with urination
  • urine that looks cloudy or smells
  • small amounts of urine, just a few drops at a time
  • leaking urine into the underwear
  • urinating more frequently than usual
  • blood in the urine, or a pink tinge to the urine
