Health Tip: Alcohol and Many Medications Don't Mix

(HealthDay News) -- Sometimes it''s easy to forget that many over-the-counter or prescription medications can cause serious interactions if taken with alcohol. If you''re taking any prescription or OTC drug, check with your doctor before you have a drink.

Here is a list of medications that can cause dangerous interactions with alcohol, courtesy of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism:

• Sleeping pills.
• Antihistamines, commonly taken for allergies, colds, and congestion.
• Pain relievers.
• Anti-anxiety drugs.
• Antidepressant drugs.
• Some medications used to treat diabetes, hypertension, and heart problems.
