Health Tip: Walking With Crutches

(HealthDay News) -- Learning to walk with crutches can be a struggle, as you learn to get around without using both legs.

Making sure that your crutches are properly fitted is the most important step, according to the Rutgers University Health System. Your doctor should have them custom measured, so the padding on each crutch is about two inches below your armpit.

Keeping your balance and proper posture is important. You should keep your head, shoulders, stomach, and buttocks in alignment. You''ll also need to be especially careful when trying to sit down in chairs or navigate stairs, says Rutgers.
