Health Tip: About Viral Gastroenteritis

(HealthDay News) -- Viral gastroenteritis is an infection that usually results in watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping and vomiting. There may also be flu-like symptoms -- including fever and chills -- that last for one day or more. Because the illness is caused by a virus, antibiotics do not work on this type of gastroenteritis, the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse says. The illness should subside on its own. Treatment should focus on replenishing fluids and preventing dehydration, the clearinghouse says. If dehydration becomes severe, you may require intravenous fluids and hospitalization.
