Health Tip: Help the Medicine Go Down

(HealthDay News) -- Although most adults understand that medicine helps make you better, a sick child may not be as easily convinced. If your child can''t stomach the unpalatable taste of her medicine, there are things you can do to mask the flavor.

Try putting any liquid medications in the refrigerator, says the American Academy of Family Physicians. You can also try mixing liquid medications with a little bit of juice (but not grapefruit juice). You can also crumble a pill into powder and mix it with a bit of pudding or applesauce.

Some pharmacies offer to add flavors to children''s medicines, so ask about that option when you pick up your child''s prescription. But always check with your doctor before mixing any medications -- both over-the-counter and prescription -- with any food or drink.
