(HealthDay News) -- Fatty liver disease occurs when the liver is not able to metabolize all of the fats a person has consumed. According to the American Liver Foundation, fatty liver disease can be triggered by starvation, obesity, malnutrition, or as a result of gastric-bypass surgery. A primary cause of fatty liver disease is obesity, so the foundation recommends a healthy, balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Alcohol consumption, which can cause the liver''s metabolism rate to drop, also should be avoided.
