Health Tip: Alleviate Homesickness

(HealthDay News) -- Homesickness is common among people -- particularly children -- who spend a significant amount of time away from home.

In severe cases, homesickness can trigger intense anxiety, which could cause a child to stop sleeping or eating.

The American Camp Association offers these suggestions to help prevent homesickness:

  • If possible, take the child to the destination in advance so it will seem more familiar upon scheduled arrival.
  • See if a good friend or relative can attend the same place as your child.
  • Talk about what she can expect on her trip, and the fun aspects to look forward to. But also acknowledge any nervousness she may feel. Reassure her that it''s normal to miss home and to be nervous about new experiences.
  • Pack something comforting from home, like a favorite toy, stuffed animal, or picture.
  • Write and send a letter to your child before she leaves so that it is waiting for her when she arrives.
