(HealthDay News) -- Your doctor may have recommended that you use a walker to help recover from surgery or injury, or to compensate for a permanent loss of balance. Walkers can help prevent debilitating falls, but it''s important to know how to use one properly. When walking, never try to lift the walker off the floor, and avoid pivoting the walker quickly, the University of Virginia Health System says. When you are rising from a sitting position, never pull yourself up with the walker. When going from a standing position to a chair, make sure the chair is not a rocker and does not have wheels. You should always try to sit in a chair with armrests.
