(HealthDayNews) -- Genetic testing can benefit people at risk of developing a genetic disease or passing a genetic defect to an unborn child.

According to the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, people at risk may include:

  • Women who become pregnant after age 34.
  • Couples who already have a child with a genetic disorder, a birth defect, or mental retardation.
  • Women who have had at least two miscarriages or whose babies died as infants.
  • Couples who would like personal answers about genetic diseases that occur frequently in their ethnic groups.
