(HealthDayNews) -- Mild cases of heartburn or indigestion can be relieved by making some simple lifestyle changes, according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

These include:

  • Avoiding spicy, acidic or other aggravating foods, and alcohol.
  • Quitting smoking.
  • Eating smaller amounts of food at one time, especially near bedtime.
  • Taking antacids, such as Maalox, or acid suppressants, such as Pepcid-AC.
  • Avoiding aspirin and ibuprofen products.

If your heartburn recurs frequently or if the pain is severe, see your doctor.
