(HealthDayNews) -- If your child is going to overnight camp for the first time this summer, a little preparation can help make the experience better.

The American Camping Association suggests you:

  • Make joint decisions about issues like what to pack, keeping in mind your child's maturity.
  • Encourage your child to talk about his concerns. Express confidence in your child's ability to handle being away from home.
  • Encourage realistic expectations. Not every moment will be wonderful, so discuss both the ups and downs he may experience.
