Health Tip: Fight Chapped Lips

(HealthDayNews) -- Winter is on the way, and for many that means another bout with chapped lips.

When the lips become chapped, people tend to lick their lips to moisten them. Unfortunately, even though saliva soothes momentarily, it eventually dries out the lips, irritating them even more. This vicious cycle leads to lips that are painful, cracked and bleeding.

To break this cycle, the lips and the surrounding skin must be protected from saliva. For milder cases, keeping the lips protected with an emollient such as petroleum jelly can be effective. When this doesn't work, a small amount of over-the-counter strength hydrocortisone cream may reduce the inflammation, allowing the petroleum jelly to be more effective.
