Health Tip: Recognizing Attention-Deficit Disorder

(HealthDayNews) -- Does your child having trouble paying attention? Does he or she seem to be in constant motion?

Depending on a professional''s diagnosis, it could represent normal childhood exuberance or a medical condition called attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

ADHD affects 3 percent to 5 percent of American children, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says. Some of the warning signs include not listening to instructions, the inability to organize oneself, hand and foot fidgeting, talking too much, leaving projects and chores unfinished, and having trouble paying attention.

Treatment may include a prescription medication, but experts say it also should include structured classroom management, parent education (to address discipline and limit-setting), and possible behavioral therapy for the child.

There is no permanent cure. Children with the disorder seldom outgrow it, but some may find ways to cope with it as adults.
