Health Tip: How to Avoid Constipation

(HealthDayNews) -- If you are frequently constipated, you are not alone.

Some 3 million Americans have the condition, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, and this leads to some 2 million doctor visits every year.

The most common cause of constipation is a diet low in fiber (found in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains) and high in fats.

The American Dietetic Association recommends 20 grams to 35 grams of fiber per day. Some of the best sources of dietary fiber are potatoes (with the skin), Lima beans, whole wheat and bran cereals, green peas, and broccoli.
