TUESDAY, Jan. 4 (HealthDayNews) -- Specific molecular events that cause a cell to switch from active growth to a permanent halt of growth -- a state called senescence -- have been identified by scientists at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. This research may help scientists better understand and fight cancer. Senescence is a normal stage of a cell''s life cycle. Continued uncontrolled cell growth is a hallmark of cancer. The findings appear in the January 2005 issue of Developmental Cell. More information The National Cancer Institute has more about cancer.
