Health Tip: Foot-Propelled Scooters Can Be Dangerous

(HealthDay News) -- They may be on every child''s Christmas list, but foot-propelled scooters may pose serious physical risks if not used properly.

Health Canada recommends that scooters only be used by children over 5 years old. It is also recommended that children under eight always be under an adult''s supervision.

To reduce the risk of injury, children who use scooters should always wear a certified helmet, as well as elbow pads and kneepads.

When a child is riding a foot-propelled scooter, it should always be used in the daytime, on smooth surfaces and in areas with limited traffic. The child should firmly grip the handles.
