Health Tip: Understanding Osteomyelitis

(HealthDay News) -- Osteomyelitis, an inflammation of bone tissue that often stems from an infection, can affect people of all ages.

Here''s a list of common symptoms, courtesy of the Loyola University Health System:

  • Fever.
  • Pain or tenderness.
  • Irritability.
  • Swelling, redness or warmth near the affected area.
  • Difficulty walking or moving joints near the affected area.
  • Limping.
  • Stiff Back.

Blood tests, X-rays, a CAT scan and ultrasound may be used to diagnose osteomyelitis; treatment depends on a patient''s age, medical history, and the extent of the condition.

Long-term complications could include stunted growth in children, fractures of the affected bone, and gangrene.
