Health Tip: Males With Enlarged Breasts

(HealthDay News) -- Gynecomastia is a condition in which above average amounts of breast tissue form in men. The American Academy of Family Physicians says causes may include hormonal changes at puberty, use of certain prescription or illicit drugs, or in more serious cases, a tumor.

In most instances, treatment is not necessary, the AAFP says. In 90 percent of boys, the condition goes away in less than three years. But a physician should monitor the condition every few months.

If tenderness is a problem, there are medications that can help, and surgery is rarely necessary.

However, symptoms including a dimpling of the skin or bloody discharge could indicate a serious condition, and you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
