Health Tip: The Pain of a Hammertoe

(HealthDay News) -- A hammertoe, one that''s curled due to a bend in the middle joint of the toe, can cause pain and pressure, especially when wearing shoes.

A hammertoe can appear in any toe, although the second toe is most often affected, the Mayo Clinic says.

To treat the condition, a doctor may recommend wearing bigger, more comfortable shoes. Surgery may be needed if the toe becomes too swollen and inflexible.
