Health Tip: Some Medications Are Easily Abused

(HealthDay News) -- Some medications, such as sleeping pills, can prove addictive if misused.

The U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse cites three types of drugs as frequently abused.

They are opioids, often prescribed for pain relief; depressants such as barbiturates; and stimulants that are used to treat sleep disorders or obesity.

To prevent abuse:

  • Keep your doctor informed about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs.
  • Take your medications only as prescribed.
  • Read the information provided by your pharmacist before starting any medication.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist about a new medication, especially if you are unsure about its effects.
