Health Tip: Soothing a Sore Throat

(HealthDay News) -- If you''ve got a nagging sore throat that isn''t caused by a serious illness like tonsillitis or strep, the American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions to alleviate the pain and irritation:

  • Try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen (brand-names include Tylenol, Advil and Aleve).
  • Drink lots of fluids, eat frozen treats like popsicles, and suck on lozenges or hard candy.
  • Use a humidifier.
  • Gargle with warm salt water a few times a day, using one teaspoon of salt per cup of water.

If your symptoms don''t ease or you''ve got a fever or other signs of a more serious illness, see a doctor at once.
