Health Tip: Healing From Tendonitis

(HealthDay News) -- Tendonitis is a condition in which a tendon has become inflamed, and can be caused by a sudden injury or prolonged stress. Strenuous physical activities can often cause a bout of tendonitis, whether the person is fit or not.

Symptoms of tendonitis usually include tenderness and pain at the site, and pain when the muscle attached to the tendon is exerted or strained. Consistent stress to a tendon, such as during daily typing or certain sports like tennis, can also cause tendonitis to flare.

According to the American College of Rheumatology, tendonitis is typically treated by resting and avoiding the cause of stress to the tendon. Wearing a splint or brace may help stabilize and prevent overusing the injured tendon. Rest is vital to helping tendonitis heal, and failure to do so could cause additional damage.

Gradual strengthening of muscles, as well as warming up and stretching before any physical activity, are keys to preventing tendonitis. Proper posture and positioning during activities such as typing or sports also can help lessen your risk, the ACR says.
