Health Tip: Take Care of Those Braces

(HealthDay News) -- Many children need braces to straighten teeth and correct their bites. The Nemours Foundation recommends a few dietary and lifestyle changes to keep the teeth healthy and prevent damage to the expensive hardware.

Biting into foods like apples or hard candies could loosen or bend metal braces. Apples should be cut into small chunks that are easier to chew. Candies and other sugary or sticky foods -- which could adhere to the braces and trigger cavities -- should be avoided.

Frequent brushing and flossing is especially important to avoid tooth decay, the foundation advises.

If braces are causing discomfort, try an over-the-counter pain reliever.
