Health Tip: Dealing With Diarrhea

(HealthDay News) -- Diarrhea can be caused by either a viral or bacterial infection, food poisoning, and a host of other diseases and conditions. By itself it can be serious, because it can lead to dehydration.

The University of Maryland Medical Center says drugs can be used to treat diarrhea, but the condition often goes away on its own.

Certain foods may worsen diarrhea, so you should stay away from chocolate, dairy products, coffee and anything with strong spices until the condition subsides.

Try eating bland foods like crackers, clear soup broth, applesauce, or bananas until you start to feel better. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. And try vegetable juice to help restore electrolytes, the UMMC advises.
