Generic Cipro I.V. Approved

MONDAY, Aug. 28 (HealthDay News) -- Generic versions of the Bayer antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin) I.V. injection were approved Monday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Last year, Cipro was on the top 200 list of the best-selling brand-name drugs in the United States, the agency said in a statement. It''s prescribed for a number of bacterial infections, including those of the urinary tract, lower respiratory tract, bones, joints, and skin.

Generic versions will now be manufactured by "multiple generic companies," the FDA said, without naming them.

"...Generic drug products are used to fill over 50 percent of all prescriptions and can cost a fraction of the price of brand name drugs," the agency''s statement said.
