Health Tip: Running Safety

(HealthDay News) -- Running is a great way to get exercise, but it can also do damage to muscles and joints without some precautions.

In addition to warming up and cooling down before and after each run, proper footwear is important, according to the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Choose shoes that offer good stability and cushion, and replace them regularly before they begin to show too much wear.

The AAOS also recommends that you drink plenty of water before and after running. You should also pay attention to the terrain. Try to stick to even footing, and avoid hills to prevent injury to the ankles and feet.
