WASHINGTON, Aug 31, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Wednesday gave Chiron Corp. permission to resume making a flu vaccine at a British facility.
The FDA had blocked imports of the influenza vaccine last year after inspectors found contamination problems.
It was not immediately clear how much vaccine Chiron, based in Emeryville, Calif., would be able to supply U.S. markets for the coming flu season, American City Business Journals said.
The company said Wednesday it hopes to be able to make and test its fluvirin vaccine "in coming months." Fluvirin still requires supplemental FDA quality and potency testing and approval before it can be sold in the United States.
The FDA also approved fluarix, a flu vaccine made by British drug company GlaxoSmithKline.
