BOSTON, Sep 06, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Researchers say they've determined immune cells known as macrophages are linked to the growth of lymph vessels in eyes.
Scientists at the Schepens Eye Research Institute found macrophages contribute to the growth of new lymph vessels, which aid in healing.
The researchers say the discovery might ultimately inspire innovative treatments for blinding eye diseases, as well as for other diseases, such as cancer, that rely on lymph vessels to spread abnormal cells throughout the body.
"This is a very significant finding," said Joan Stein-Streilein and Patricia D'Amore, senior authors in the study at the Departments of Medicine and Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. "It unlocks a whole new dimension in our understanding of these important cells."
The Schepens Eye Research Institute, an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School, is the largest independent eye research facility in the United States.
The findings are detailed in the September issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
