PIERRE, S.D., Jun 25, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- South Dakota health officials have announced the state's first two human West Nile cases of the year.
State Epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger said the victims' names and gender would not be released because of privacy concerns. They contracted the mosquito-born disease in Butte and Stanley counties, the Sioux Falls, S.D. Argus Leader reported.
The state earlier confirmed detection of West Nile in a mosquito pool in Sioux Falls.
"It's across the state now, so all South Dakotans need to be aware, especially as we get into the Fourth of July," Kightlinger said.
Kansas and Missouri have reported one human West Nile disease case each this year.
South Dakota reported 51 human cases of the disease and one death in 2004. In 2003, the state had 1,041 human cases, the nation's third-largest number, and 14 deaths.
