Asthma affects nearly 5 million children in the United States. Asthma is the leading cause of school absences, resulting in a loss of 10 million school days. Many children must manage their asthma at school with medications or other preventive measures. Approximately 10% of children experience exercise-induced asthma. Asthma accounts for more hospitalizations in children than any other chronic illness.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has developed a school asthma educational slide set. The slide presentations are available for public use. The slide presentations are discussed and available below.
The School Asthma Educational Slide set is in 2 parts.
Part 1 presents background information about the growing problem of asthma in the United States. It reviews what asthma is and what school staff should know about helping students to manage their asthma, including eliminating common triggers and recognizing the early warning signs of asthma episodes (attacks).

Part 2 outlines 5 goals important for good asthma management in schools. Each goal is followed by specific actions that school staff can take to move them closer toward achieving that goal. These slides provide guidance to a school staff ready to make changes toward a more asthma-friendly school environment.

The NHLBI has also made available slide presentations and information on the expert Panel Report 2 (EPR-2): Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. The EPR-2 slide set is particularly useful in expanding the basic school information to develop a more detailed presentation that focuses on the medical management of asthma, the assessment of severity of the condition, and the importance of partnerships (with health care physicians and other professionals, families and school personnel) to provide education and support to people with asthma.
The slide set consists of 6 parts and includes the following:
asthma, asthma medications, asthma FAQs, asthma frequently asked questions, managing asthma in children, treating asthma in children, prevention of asthma, exercise-induced asthma, pharmacologic therapy for asthma, asthma education, asthma care, assessment of asthma, factors contributing to asthma, medical management of asthma, asthma in school children
