What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

Damage to the laryngeal nerves may cause:

  • hoarseness
  • inhalation of food or bacteria into the lungs, which causes aspiration pneumonia
  • difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath
  • A person may also have other symptoms depending upon the underlying cause of the nerve damage.
